NEW YORK - On April 3, 2008, Thelen LLP held a first-of-its-kind Construction Insurance Summit titled, Construction Insurance: Best Practices and New Developments for 2008 and Beyond.
The recent insurance "summit" in New York provided a perfect opportunity to share the firm's knowledge in this area, as well as discuss recent developments and trends. Topics included: Construction Insurance Best Practices, Professional Liability Coverage in a Nutshell and An Introduction to London Market Insurance Coverage.
"Effective construction risk management requires a sophisticated understanding of insurance, which effects both project cost and profitability and our clients' long term protection against unexpected financial exposure after projects are completed," said Allen Ross, senior partner in charge of Thelen's NY Construction and Government Contracts department.
The firm's nationally recognized construction insurance practice has long provided clients with unique support in this area, as it is comprised of lawyers with deep knowledge of the intricacies of construction and insurance, and it's one more area of expertise that distinguishes Thelen's top-ranked construction and government contracts department.
Ross said he was particularly grateful for timely and informative presentations by some of the firm's clients, including Bill Noonan of Structuretone, John Hunt of Forest City, and Jose Pienkangura of Hunt Construction. Ross also thanked Thelen partner David Dekker, chair of the firm's insurance practice, and senior associate Stephen Palley, also a member of the firm's insurance practice, for helping to organize the summit and for their informative presentations on construction insurance and best practices.
Attendee feedback was overwhelmingly supportive, with many suggesting that the event needs to be repeated on a regular basis. Said Pienkangura of Hunt Construction: "The event was extremely informative. Thelen is one of the few law firms with an understanding of complex insurance coverage and risk management issues in the infrastructure and construction industries."
Thelen's Construction Insurance practice deals both with traditional dispute resolution and counseling clients on complex insurance and risk management issues. The firm has handled numerous claims under general liability, builders risk, professional, environmental, commercial property, subguard, EPL, business interruption, OPC, marine, and other policies.
