Thelen's New York Office Provides Back-to-School Supplies for Harlem's PS 133

'

NEW YORK (September 11, 2007)—Thelen LLP had a special surprise for the children of New York Public School 133 on their first day of classes: backpacks filled with back-to-school supplies.

Thelen provided backpacks for each of the 175 students in grades Kindergarten through Second at PS 133’s Fred R. Moore Academy in Harlem.  Each pack contained 20 different items—including crayons, pencils, glue, erasers, folders, pens, and paper—as well as a new book that will be added to the student’s classroom library.  The backpacks were presented at a special assembly hosted by academy principal Pamela Craig, who thanked the firm for the efforts of its attorneys and staff.

To reach the goal of a backpack for every child, Thelen’s New York offices, at both 875 and 900 Third Avenue, engaged in a friendly competition between three departments to see which one would be the first to fill 50 backpacks with all items on the supply list.

"Although each team wanted to win, and there was a spirited competition to buy all the supplies we needed, the real winners are the children," said Thelen special counsel Rebecca Brazzano, who led the effort.  "This was a truly heartfelt effort by the entire office.  We wanted the students to have everything they needed for their first day of school.”

The early-childhood project, called “Education Gives Children Choices,” is part of Thelen’s continued involvement with the Fred R. Moore Academy, located at Fifth Avenue and 132nd Street. In August, Thelen’s New York Summer Associates teamed with volunteer organization New York Cares on a beautification project that transformed the school’s brick walls into a mural of butterflies, ladybugs, and beach balls spanning several hundred feet.

Also this week, Thelen’s regional office in Hartford, Connecticut participated in a similar program led by real estate partner Maureen Massa.  In “Operation Backpack,” the Hartford office provided a total of 73 backpacks, two boxes of supplies, and approximately $500.00 in donations for underserved area children.  (Click here for more information.)
